Born in 1994, FATO is a South-Brazil group that aims to show, in a very particular manner, the artistic work of many poets and composers.

Each member of the band has a distinct musical background. Working mainly with the already rich panorama of the Brazilian Music, FATO makes unusual combinations of various styles and rhythms (fandango, baião, capoeira, maracatu, flamenco, samba, choro, etc.).

One of the sources of the music made by FATO is the fandango of Paraná seaboard, an ancient mix of Iberian fandango and Carijó Indian dance patterns that still resounds in community celebrations, in places like the Valadares Island, at the neighborhood of the port town of Paranaguá, in Southern Brazil. To the accompaniment of rustic small guitars and fiddles and handclapping, dancers tap on hollow ground their wooden clogs, following widely-varied rhythmic “marks”.

The percussion made with feet wearing wooden clogs, taken from the fandango of Paraná, associated with conventional percussion instruments and the sonority of objects such as tins, pipes and pans are a kind of “trade-mark” of the group.

In almost ten years of work and search, the band has produced five different shows, each of them with a special care in visual terms: direction, lighting and dressing.

As an independent work, FATO has done many presentations in several cities, obtaining successful audience and critics. About the four recorded CDs (“fato” - 1995, “Fogo Mordido” – 1997,  Oquelatá Quelateje” – 2000, produced by Rodolfo Stroeter and “Oquelatá Vivo” – 2002, recorded live) the group has got respect and recommendation from important newspapers and magazines from Brazil and United States.
